Workflow Trigger Nodes

Triggers nodes represent events that occur in your account which kickoff (or start) a workflow.

Each workflow can only have one trigger node. This table describes all possible trigger nodes and provides links to the topics for using each individual node.

Node Name Description Example
Contact Is Added Begins a workflow when a contact is added to your account, and optionally when a Transactional contact is updated to an Active status. You could use this node to trigger a welcome message for a new contact.
Contact Status Change Begins a workflow when a new contact is added with a particular status or an existing contact's status has changed to a particular status. You could use this node to trigger a welcome series for when a contact changes status from transactional to active and can receive marketing emails.
Contact Field Updated Begins a workflow when a specific field value is updated and compared to a value you choose. If you track rewards points, you could use this node to send a reward message when the field hits a certain value, like 500 points.
Email Is Sent Begins a workflow when a specific message is sent.
Note: This trigger node will ignore emails sent by workflows.
You could use this node during a re-engagement campaign. If you have a large group of contacts to send a series of re-engagement messages to, and you send the first message to the groups manually, you can use this node to send the subsequent messages in the series automatically.
List Membership Change Begins a workflow when a contact is either added to, or removed from a list. If a contact opts in to receive information about a contest, you can use this node to trigger a specific email for that contest.
Segment Membership Change Begins a workflow when a contact is added to, or removed from a segment. If a contact has not opened the last 30 messages you have sent, you can use this node to start a re-engagement campaign series.
Webform Event Begins a workflow when a Webform is viewed or submitted. If a contact updates their preferences in a webform, you could use this node to send them a thank you message.
Twitter Event Begins a workflow when a mention of a Twitter user name stored in your account occurs. You can use this node if you want to send a standard tweet to anyone that mentions your tracked Twitter handle.
Keyword Membership Change Begins a workflow when an contact gets added or removed from a subscription keyword. You could use this node to send specific content, like a welcome series, to a contact that has been added to your subscription keyword.
Received API Event Begins a workflow when an API event with this workflow's keyword is received. If a contact has been updated through a 3rd party API, you could use this node to trigger a welcome message.
Cart Is Abandoned Begins a workflow when a shopping cart is abandoned. If a customer abandons their shopping cart, you can use this node to start a cart recovery series.
Order Is Added Begins a workflow when a contact completes an order. If a contact places an order, you can use this node to send them a thank you message or an SMS confirmation.
Order Is Shipped Begins a workflow when the order state for an order is updated to shipped. You can use this node to send the contact a shipping confirmation message by email or SMS.
Moved From Workflow Begins a workflow when a contact is added to a workflow using the Moved To Workflow action node.
Note: You can click the another workflow text to see what workflows are triggering this node.
You can use this node to identify and target contacts on a workflow because of the Moved to Workflow action node.
SMS is Sent Begins a workflow when you send an SMS message to a contact.
Note: The Send SMS action node will not trigger this node.
You can collect information through replies from the SMS message that is sent and store them as custom fields.
Incoming Basic Keyword Begins a workflow when a contact texts a specified basic keyword. You can trigger a series of follow up messages for a one time interaction, such as for a contest and/or to add people to a list. You can also use this node to collect subscription keyword opt ins.
